Summer reading recommendations

What’s on your reading list for this summer?

I’m always on the lookout for book recommendations and it’s been nice over these past few weeks to enjoy the August sunshine with some great fiction.

My current read is a recommendation from a friend: The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz, a totally compelling novel about a struggling author who steals another writer’s idea and turns it into a huge bestseller. Except someone out there knows what he did and is determined to expose him…

With summer in full swing, I thought it would be a good time to mention a few of my own top fiction picks. So in no particular order, here are some of the stories I’ve really enjoyed recently – and that you might like too.

Look out for Our Holiday by Louise Candlish, Knife River by Justine Champine and City on Fire by Graham Bartlett

Our Holiday by Louise Candlish

A scorching summer thriller – tension rises to a murderous pitch between affluent second-home owners and locals in a beautiful south coast resort. Also a Richard & Judy Book Club pick!

Knife River by Justine Champine

A beautifully-written mystery as a young woman returns to her hometown when her mother’s body is found buried in the woods – 15 years after she went missing. An engrossing, powerful debut with a fantastic sense of place.

City on Fire by Graham Bartlett

Chief Superintendent Jo Howe is back, fighting a tidal wave of drugs threatening to overwhelm the streets of Brighton. Brilliantly gritty and authentic British crime fiction that draws on the author’s own extensive experience as a senior police officer.

I enjoyed The Trap by Catherine Ryan Howard, One Wrong Turn by CM Ewan and The Woman on the Ledge by Ruth Mancini

The Trap by Catherine Ryan Howard

A desperate woman tries to trap a serial killer roaming the Irish countryside – using herself as bait. Such a creepy premise and a story with more than enough twists and turns to keep you guessing right to the end.

One Wrong Turn by CM Ewan

You stop on a rainy night to pick up a couple stranded by the side of the road. But it’s not long before you realise you’ve made a terrible mistake – and it might be your last… A pure foot-to-the-floor thriller!

The Woman on the Ledge by Ruth Mancini

One woman falls to her death from a London skyscraper, while another is accused of her murder. But nothing is quite as it seems in this gripping tale of obsession and revenge. Listened to this as an audiobook – highly recommended.

Not forgetting of course The Dream Home by T.M. Logan

OK I’m biased about this last one, but I couldn’t resist adding it to the list 😊

Whatever you’re reading now or next, I hope you enjoy it and that you’re having a lovely summer. I have my fingers crossed that the sunshine and blue skies will last for another few weeks yet…
